Hybrid Connectivity
LDAS Hybrid Connectivity: Bridging On-Prem Lab Instruments with Cloud Intelligence
In today’s digitally connected lab environments, organizations often operate across multiple on-premises sites with instruments requiring high reliability. LDAS is designed to support this distributed setup through a secure hybrid deployment model hosted on AWS, enabling:
- Seamless, scalable communication with instruments across any number of customer sites
- Centralized data management and consistent performance
- Data integrity and secure cloud integration
Hybrid Integration Without Compromise
LDAS allows laboratories to retain critical instruments on-premises while leveraging cloud-hosted orchestration, analytics, and storage. This approach combines the best of both worlds—local control with cloud-powered intelligence. This architecture ensures that,
- Real-time secure data transmission is possible without relocating physical infrastructure
- There is reliability through queuing, retries, and metadata preservation
- Full traceability and compliance support
By harmonizing data flow across hybrid environments, LDAS empowers your labs to:
- Maintain operational continuity
- Accelerate data processing and analysis
- Centralize storage and compliance
- Scale effortlessly with growing workloads
Powered by Apache NiFi: Intelligent Data Orchestration
To deliver this seamless connectivity, LDAS uses Apache NiFi at its heart—a proven orchestration engine that ensures reliable, scalable, and secure communication between on-prem and cloud environments.
- Remote NiFi (On-Premises): Deployed within the lab’s local infrastructure, this instance interfaces directly with instruments, collecting data via instrument agents and initiating secure transfers.
- Cloud NiFi: Hosted within the LDAS cloud environment, it receives data using NiFi’s Site-to-Site protocol, ensuring efficient and encrypted data exchange through Remote Process Groups (RPGs). This architecture guarantees uninterrupted data flow even in complex multi-site setups.
Security-First Communication Architecture
Security is not an afterthought—it is embedded into every layer of LDAS connectivity. LDAS is designed with security at its core:
- All data traffic is confined to port 443, simplifying firewall configurations.
- Inbound connections originate exclusively from the cloud NiFi instance, ensuring that only authorized traffic reaches the on-prem NiFi.
- Outbound connections are restricted to verified endpoints, including LDAS APIs and designated AWS S3 buckets.
- Whitelisting the cloud NiFi server on the on-prem instance guarantees encrypted, authenticated communication.
This secure configuration ensures:
- Protection against unauthorized access
- Compliance with industry standards and regulations
Data confidentiality and integrity:
All data transfers between on-prem and cloud environments are encrypted using SSL, ensuring secure transmission over the network. Authenticated endpoints, along with NiFi’s queuing, retries, and flowfile tracking, maintain data completeness and prevent loss or tampering throughout the pipeline. This means your lab data remains protected and traceable end-to-end.
LDAS is built to scale effortlessly—whether you're managing a single lab or a global network of facilities. With intelligent orchestration, secure protocols, and real-time data flow, LDAS transforms traditional lab operations into a connected, cloud-empowered ecosystem.
Integration with Scientific Data Ecosystems:
Beyond connectivity, LDAS also integrates with your broader scientific data ecosystem. Modern laboratories operate within a complex digital landscape, relying on a variety of scientific data ecosystems—including Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs), data lakes, and specialized data stores—to manage, analyze, and preserve experimental data. LDAS is purpose-built to integrate seamlessly with these platforms, whether they are deployed on-premises, in private cloud environments, or across public cloud infrastructures.
By enabling secure and scalable connectivity, LDAS empowers laboratories to unify their data workflows across diverse systems. This integration facilitates real-time data exchange, centralized access, and enhanced traceability, while maintaining compliance with industry standards. LDAS natively supports commonly used platforms, ensuring effortless fit into existing scientific ecosystems without disrupting operational continuity.
